What is a Consumer/Survivor
A consumer/survivor is defined as anyone who has "consumed" the services of the mental health system for a significant mental health issue. The use of the term survivor is a tribute to the innate strength of mental health consumers, and affirms that they have the necessary skills to survive the impact of their illness.
Mental health issues cover a broad range of diagnoses from panic & anxiety attacks to clinical depression, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress, eating disorders and schizophrenia.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 Canadians will suffer from some sort of mental health issues in the course of their lives. Depression is the fastest growing illness in North America.
